Why balsam actually smells sweeter than pine

The FAQ above notes that balsam reads softer than raw pine — that difference has a specific chemical cause, not just a marketing distinction. Pine’s sharp, resinous character comes mainly from alpha-pinene, a highly volatile terpene that also gives turpentine its bite; fragrance-ingredient references describe it as the “piercing,” camphoraceous compound behind a cut pine tree’s astringent edge.
